E-LIXO MAPS: recycling of electronic wasteCreated on 2012/6/16 | Update 2011/12/12 | 286 reads
E-LIXO MAPS is an no-profit initiative of the Instituto Sergio Motta in partnership with the Department of the Environment of São Paulo. It's a search engine, developed in order to map and registrate collection and recycling points of electronic waste throughout Brazil. Just visit the website of E-LIXO MAPS, enter the full address, the type of e-waste you want to discard and click on "search collection points." Linking the information to the platform with Google Maps and the Places Bank (Banco de Posto), the system will show the options available close to the registered address searched.
The Places Bank keeps the continuous registration of new establishments to satisfy the needs of the population. It is a delicate process, because we adhere to a logistics system for selection, review and approval of the places.
Initially, the project was focused on mapping, registering and providing collection points located in São Paulo. However, the demand for search, interests and needs of the population, made it mandatory to expand coverage and expand their research and efforts. Gradually they will reach all regions of Brazil.
E-LIXO MAPS proposes a horizontal relationship with the population exchange. The most part of the recycling points come from the indication of the site's users.
The environmental impact of hundreds of thousands of computers, cell phone batteries, countless millions of CDs and DVDs that are discarded every day is enormous. We can't ignore the emergence of thinking creatively and critically about the impact of e-waste in everyday life on the planet.
